Dirty carpets impact your life more than just looking bad. The average carpet can accumulate more than 40 pounds of dirt per year. Carpets can hold up to 4 times their weight in dirt! Carpet dust also accumulates from walking, skin particles, pet hair, dander, dead skin cells, insect husks and insect feces. This all becomes carpet dust, and thousands of dust mites can survive in just 1 ounce of carpet dust. In addition, dust can attract bacteria and mold.
Dirty carpets can cause several health problems.
Molds live in dirty carpets. Molds cause flu-like symptoms especially when inhaled. This can also trigger an asthma attack. Both molds and carpet dusts attract bacteria. Dust mites living in carpet can cause nose irritation, rash, and eye irritation.
Mold and bacteria living in your carpet can also cause many skin problems. As you walk around your carpet, these enter the body via cuts, openings, even skin pores. Dirt Damages Your Carpet
Dirty carpet wears out faster. The dirt and dust accumulates deep within the fibers of the carpet. This will cut the carpet fibers and cause the carpet to get flat over time. Keeping this dirt removed helps the carpet last much longer.
The number one thing you can do to help keep your carpet clean is vacuum. Most vacuums only pull up surface dirt. A really good vacuum will suck more dirt from deep within the carpet fibers. You should vacuum a minimum of once a week but in highly trafficked areas, 2-3 times a week may be needed. Running an automated daily robotic vacuum on schedule is another good method to remove surface dirt. However, these devices cannot get any deep dirt under the carpet and should not be a substitute for a good weekly carpet vacuum. Ideally, to keep dust and debris out of the air while vacuuming, you want a vacuum with a good HEPA filter.
Vacuuming Not Enough
While good vacuuming practices help your carpet last longer and keep out surface dirt, it's still not enough to keep your carpet clean and sanitary for you and your family.
